The Janissaries were an elite infantry unit that was a part of the Ottoman Sultan’s household troops. Vienna was a very strategic city for the Ottomans to take, and by the time reinforcements arrived the Ottomans had started to tunnel the inner walls. The King of Poland, John III Sobieski, had had a treaty with Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire since the spring of 1683 that said that if each other were attacked the other would defend them. At the start of the campaign, the Ottoman forces were around 170,000 men, with the Viennese having less than 20,000. The reinforcements also included the Charles of Lorraine and some of the German princes such as Saxony and Bavaria. The seige had started in July 1683 and it wasn’t until September 1683 that the reinforcements, including the Polish cavalry, arrived. As Kara Mustafa tried to shift troops to deal with them, a confused fight in the hinterlands turned into an Ottoman rout. This post is going to look at some of the lyrics and compare them to the history of the events. One of the songs is titled “ Winged Hussars” and is about the arrival of the Polish cavalry during the 1683 Siege of Vienna. This album took inspiration from “last stand” military battles, where troops face overwhelming odds trying to hold a defensive position. In 2016 the Swedish band Sabaton released an album called The Last Stand.
